 soil -is the upper layer of earth in which plants grow, a black or dark brown material typically consisting of a mixture of organic remains, clay, and rock particles.

  • weak structure 
  • poor water retention properties            

  • high permeability
  • highly sensitivity to compaction





characteristics of clay soil

  • hold large volume of water
  • allows for root to hold tight to the soil, plant are likely to heave.

  • retain minerals
  • they are very slow to warm in spring and cool more slowly in autumn.



characteristics of loam 

  • well - draining, yet retains moisture well.     

  • rich in nutrients
  • has a slightly acidic to neutral pH.
  • the texture is crumbly
